Heit Family History

Rachel, Jeremy, Leah & Sophie Heit
My grandchildren--Rachel, Jeremy, Sophie & Leah Heit-- have been working on their family tree for Hebrew School. Much of it was lost in the Holocaust, and reportedly Heit was an adopted name in the New World on arrival in Brooklyn, NY. A book of the European Heit family possibly exists, somewhere in Brooklyn. Jeremy is going to investigate this possibility. His Bar Mitzvah is January 29, 2011 in Atlanta and the web site for it is: http://jeremyheit.weebly.com
Checking just one link from the checklist for Roots Web's Footnotes.com and then searching on Heit-NY, a wealth of family resources was found. Most require a paid membership to view the record.
A checklist of how to search Heit family history is here : http://www.genealogytoday.com/surname/finder.mv?Surname=Heit

Heit History
There is possibly a book of Heits, a family publication, in NY somewhere. Searching a site such as Roots WEb's Footnotes.com shows Heits were on the Revolutionary War Rolls in NY in the 1700s. Naturalization papers are also available on-line; in the mid-1800s, Heits were showing origins in Bavaria, which is consistent with the history of the name. As there are costs to buy the full-size, readable image, I only acquired the free thumbnails shown below. The PBS series "The Jewish-Americans" clearly documented the role of Jews in settling the West. Jews started as Jewish peddlars first in NY & then emigrated West & built empires.
